Rome used to living on a knife-edge

Our correspondent on the city rivals whose enmity has spawned the Ultras


OVER the past three decades, Rome has acquired a reputation as the stabbing capital of Italian football and Middlesbrough supporters are not the first visiting fans to suffer in the Eternal City.
AS Roma and Lazio have large groups of troublemakers within the ranks of their fans, thugs who have helped make the term ultra notorious. However, the Ultra phenomenon, which developed in the early 1970s and takes its name from the “ultra-violence” of A Clockwork Orange, the movie, is about more than hooliganism. Many Ultra groups are merely highly organised supporters’ clubs, yet it is the sinister version of the movement that makes the headlines.



Roma fans alone have at least six Ultra groups, with names such as “The Boys” and “The Guerillas of the South Curve”, and their violent clashes with supporters of Lazio, their city rivals, are particularly nasty. Fans of both teams are notorious for their racist views and display fascist symbols such as portraits of Mussolini and chant songs praising him. When playing against Roma — who have a large Jewish fan base — Lazio fans have chanted: “ Auschwitz is your town, the ovens your houses.”

Last year, La Repubblica newspaper took as a positive sign that the funeral of Paolo Zappavigna, the former head of The Boys, was attended by Roma and Lazio supporters. Thousands of fans broke down police security barriers and gave the fascist salute around the coffin.

Paolo Di Canio, the Lazio forward, is a former Ultra. Di Canio defended his use of a straight-arm salute in December by saying: “I am a fascist, not a racist.”

Some Ultra groups have quasi-formal links with the club and receive perks such as preferential ticket allocations and subsidised out-of-town travel. This gives the impression that they have some power over the teams they support. CUCS Roma, formerly a communist fans’ group, once threw fish at players to show their displeasure at the team’s performance.

Ultras tend to be fanatically opposed to what they believe is excessive commercialisation in modern football, but their anti-commercial stance does not stop them from selling their own merchandise. The Boys’ website offers branded caps, scarves and even CDs.

But not all Ultra groups are involved with hooliganism. Many have their own professionally designed websites, logos and fanzines. In most cases, Ultras do little more than organise the choreographed flag-waving displays before matches and lend their support to the team.

According to Hooligans website (www.hooligans-ww.com), there are four fundamental rules that define Ultra culture: never stop singing during a match; never sit down during a match, or risk becoming an armchair fan; follow as many games as possible, regardless of cost; and always remain loyal to your Curva (the stand in which your group is located).

Il gruppo USCITA 15 nasce durante l'inverno 2005 da alcuni ragazzi dei quartieri La Rustica - Tor Bella Monaca militanti nelle due calde curve romane.

Ecco a voi alcune informazioni:

Questo direttivo viene creato con lo scopo di unire tutti i tifosi romanisti e laziali, che a causa di fede calcistica diversa, ma con il resto dei valori in comune, sotto un unico nome USCITA 15.

Uscita 15 sta a rappresentare il numero dell'uscita del Grande Raccordo Anulare di Roma ossia La Rustica, luogo e appartenenza della maggior parte dei fondatori del gruppo.

Per quanto riguarda il lato politico, i nostri ideali sono rivolti verso destra non ritenendoci però estremisti come qualcuno può immaginare anche perchè nel nostro gruppo le cose primarie sono l'amicizia e il rispetto.

Siamo un gruppo giovane dove, almeno per ora, l' eta' si aggira intorno ai 23 anni ma con una buona frequenza nel mondo delle due curve.

Vogliamo sottolineare che il nostro gruppo non appartiene o meglio non fa riferimento a nessuna squadra ma solo ed esclusivamente all'unione del mondo ultras delle due tifoserie romane, infatti non si ha nessuno striscione nelle due curve.

I nostri principi e valori sono basati sull'AMICIZIA e sul RISPETTO RECIPROCO anche perchè a noi..... gli infami non ci piacciono.

L'appartenenza al nostro gruppo è aperta a TUTTI i tifosi romanisti e laziali che condividono la nostra linea di pensiero e nessuno è trattato in modo differente dall'altro.

Dal momento che questo gruppo racchiude tutti i nostri pensieri in comune, anche noi abbiamo particolare odio per diverse tifoserie d'Italia come LIVORNO, NAPOLI, ATALANTA, BRESCIA, MILAN, JUVENTUS, FIORENTINA e poi altre ma queste sono superiori a tutte. Un nostro altrettanto nemico TERRORISTA del calcio capitolino a cui il nostro odio si concentra maggiormente al di la del calcio sei tu GIORNALISTA!!!

c'è gente che è alta 1.90 e che legge, legge, legge e insulta insulta insulta...

che c'e' gente che e' alta 28 cm e parla,parla,parla....
